As a long-time admirer of Santa Maria Novella, I’m deeply disappointed by the brand’s recent direction. What was once a refined and historic perfumery — celebrated for its authenticity, artisanal quality, and timeless formulas — now feels like a hollow luxury brand chasing margins.
Most frustrating is the sharp price increase: fragrances that used to cost around €95 only a few years ago are now sold for €125 or more, despite being repackaged as eau de cologne - a concentration that contains significantly less fragrance essence than the previous eau de parfum versions. So essentially: less perfume, higher prices.
On top of that, beloved formulas like Melograno have been noticeably reformulated, losing much of their original character and longevity. Some historic scents have been discontinued altogether. Meanwhile, the packaging has become more generic, with adhesive labels and a mass-produced aesthetic that lacks the charm and elegance Santa Maria Novella was once known for.
Less Perfume, Higher Prices - A Disheartening Shift.
