  <p>Known in Italian as giaggiolo, the iris plant's fragrance comes not from its petals but from its rhizome, an underground stem that yields orris after years of drying and ageing. One of the rarest materials in perfumery, it has been cultivated on the Florentine hills since the Middle Ages. It anchors the base of L'Iris alongside musk and ambergris.   Apply at pulse points: wrists, neck and behind the ears. Body heat helps to diffuse the fragrance throughout the day.
